Sonas Medical Family Practice - Care you can rely on

When Dr Juliyan Shan and Dr Jeewan Uragoda opened Sonas Medical Family Practice in Letterkenny, it wasn’t simply about opening a new GP surgery.

It was about giving something back to the county they are proud to call home.

Although Dr Shan originally grew up in London and Dr Uragoda is originally from Sri Lanka, both doctors chose to make Donegal their permanent home after completing their GP training and working across the county.

Throughout those years, they cared for patients in communities across Donegal, building lasting relationships and gaining a deep appreciation for the people who live here.

At the same time, they witnessed first-hand the increasing pressures facing general practice. More patients were finding it difficult to register with a GP, appointment demand continued to grow, and access to primary care was becoming increasingly challenging.

Rather than accepting those challenges as inevitable, they decided to become part of the solution.

That decision led to a significant personal investment in establishing Sonas Medical Family Practice—a modern GP surgery in Forte Retail Park, Letterkenny, created with one clear purpose: to increase local GP capacity, improve access to healthcare and provide high-quality, patient-centred care for the people of Donegal.

“Donegal has given us so much throughout our training and careers. We’ve built our lives here, and opening Sonas Medical Family Practice is our way of giving something back to the community that welcomed us.

“We wanted to create a practice that would not only serve patients today but continue to support the healthcare needs of Donegal for many years to come.”

Designed with patients in mind, the practice offers a modern, comfortable environment with free parking, disabled access and a welcoming team committed to providing continuity of care.

Wherever possible, the practice aims to provide timely access to GP appointments while maintaining a high standard of personalised, patient-centred care.

Sonas Medical Family Practice is now welcoming both Medical Card and private patients, making it one of the few GP practices in Letterkenny currently accepting new registrations from both.

For Dr Shan and Dr Uragoda, the vision extends far beyond opening a new practice.

They hope Sonas Medical Family Practice will continue to grow alongside the community it serves—expanding GP capacity, creating local employment opportunities and providing accessible, high-quality healthcare for generations of families across Donegal.

“General practice is built on relationships. We want our patients to feel known, listened to and supported throughout every stage of life. Our commitment is not just to providing excellent medical care today, but to being part of this community for the long term.”

Whether you have recently moved to the area, are registering with a GP for the first time, or are in need of a GP, Sonas Medical Family Practice is now welcoming new patients.
