Sergeant Jim Collins told Letterkenny District Court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has consented to Reid being sent forward for trial to the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court

A Stranorlar man accused of a serious assault on a Garda is to go forward to the Circuit Court.

Darin Reid, 36, of Copper Beech, Convoy, was before Letterkenny District Court.

Garda Pauline Doherty gave evidence of serving a book of evidence on Reid at Letterkenny Courthouse.

Reid has been charged over an incident on February 22, 2025 at Knockfair, Stranorlar.

It is alleged that Reid spat at Garda Rory McGowan and then punched him on the left eye. Sergeant Jim Collins told a previous court sitting that this caused a black eye on the garda, who also had marks on his chest where he alleged that Reid kicked and punched him.

Reid is charged with an assault causing harm, a charge contrary to section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997

Previously, Judge Eiteáin Cunningham refused jurisdiction in the case at the District Court.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has consented to Reid being sent forward for trial to the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court.

Judge Emile Daly made an order returning Reid for trial.

Judge Daly administered the alibi warning and made a section 56 order relating to interviews.

Bail is on the same terms and conditions.

Legal aid was granted to Reid’s solicitor, Mr Michael Shiel, and one legal counsel was assigned.

Mr Shiel said that his client had a High Court bail application previously and is looking for a transcript of that appearance. It was clarified that this application should be brought before the High Court.
