Donegal Airport will receive €367,000 under the Government’s new Regional Airports Programme 2026–2030.

Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien said the programme reflects a strong commitment to regional infrastructure, adding that investment in airports like Donegal is essential for balanced development and sustaining vital links for rural communities.

For Donegal Airport, the funding will be directed toward a series of technical and safety improvements. These include enhancements to navigation systems such as localiser and distance measuring equipment, the implementation of improved flight procedures, and a detailed engineering inspection of the runway.

Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher, Fianna Fáil, said the funding will support balanced regional development.

“Our airport is a lifeline for the county, helping to sustain jobs, support tourism and ensure essential connectivity for communities and businesses in one of the most peripheral regions in the State,” he said.

The funding for Donegal Airport will support investment in safety and security, alongside projects with a sustainability focus, assisting the airport in meeting carbon reduction targets and building resilience against climate change.

Deputy Gallagher said these projects are essential to maintaining Donegal Airport’s high standards while preparing it for the future.

“These upgrades will ensure Donegal Airport continues to operate safely and efficiently, meeting strict regulatory requirements while building resilience against future challenges," he added. "Investment like this is not just about infrastructure, it’s about safeguarding access, opportunity and economic development for our county.”

Deputy Gallagher highlighted the airport’s strong and growing economic impact, noting that Donegal Airport directly employs 29 people; supports 169 indirect jobs; contributes €86 million in economic output and generates €39 million in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the regional economy.

Deputy Gallagher noted that the updated Donegal–Dublin flight schedule comes into effect from tomorrow Friday, May 1st, further strengthening connectivity for the region.

Under the revised timetable the aircraft will be based overnight at Carrickfinn; morning departure from Donegal: 7:55am (returning 12:55pm) and afternoon departure from Donegal: 2:30pm (returning from Dublin at 6:55pm)

This restored and practical schedule will once again facilitate same-day return travel for passengers. Deputy Gallagher concluded that he would continue to advocate strongly for Donegal Airport.

He said: “Donegal’s geography means reliable air connectivity is essential, not optional. I will continue working with the Minister for Transport to ensure Donegal Airport continues to receive the backing it needs to grow sustainably and continue serving the people of this county,” he said.

Under the latest distribution, Ireland West Airport has been awarded €2.834 million, while Kerry Airport will benefit from €2.766 million in funding. Shannon Airport has been granted €1.936 million.

Minister O’Brien said: “I am pleased to allocate almost €8 million in capital funding this year to support Shannon, Ireland West (Knock), Kerry and Donegal airports. This level of targeted support, provided under this Government’s new Regional Airports Programme 2026-2030, is an indication of the importance Government attaches to regional airports. These airports are critical pieces of national infrastructure and this investment will aid them as they continue to grow sustainably.”

Minister of State with responsibility for Rural Transport Jerry Buttimer said: “This significant capital funding underlines the Government’s strong commitment to our regional airports. Shannon, Ireland West, Kerry and Donegal airports are not only vital to maintaining connectivity for the communities and businesses they serve, but act as gateways for visitors to some of the most beautiful parts of our country.”
