Cllr Declan Meehan spoke of 'simple motion' at Letterkenny-Milford MD

The Progress Flag will once again be flown at the Letterkenny Public Services Centre to mark Letterkenny Pride.

The agreement followed a motion by Cllr Declan Meehan at Tuesday’s Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting, calling for the flag to be flown during the festival from the 25th May until the 31st May.

Cllr Meehan said it was a “simple motion” and noted that the flag was flown at the Public Services Centre last year.

He said Letterkenny Pride, now in its fourth year, has become “not only a staple in the LGBTQ+ community calendar across Ireland but also a key component of the events calendar in Letterkenny."

Cllr Meehan said the festival places "family fun and inclusiveness at its centre" while also giving rising local artists a platform alongside established music stars.

He also paid tribute to the community that delivers the festival each year.

Donegal County Council first raised the Pride flag in 2022 at both Lifford County House and Letterkenny Public Services Centre.

The Progress Flag features the original Pride rainbow, while also representing marginalised people of colour in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the trans and intersex community.

Cllr Meehan said flying the Progress Flag again this year would send an important message that everyone is welcome and respected, regardless of sexual orientation or identity.

“It shows they are seen, valued and included in civic life,” Cllr Meehan said.

He added that the flag often represents groups who have faced the greatest barriers, including transgender people and people from minority ethnic backgrounds.

The Letterkenny Pride committee has also requested that the Polestar Roundabout be lit up for Pride week.
