WATCH: Senior government minister reacts to latest developments at RTÉ

A SENIOR government minister has said the appointment of a new leadership team at RTÉ is only the "start of the process" to rebuild public trust and confidence in the national broadcaster.

Kevin Bakhurst, who officially started as director-general of RTÉ this Monday morning, immediately announced he was 'standing down' the previous executive board and replacing it with a new ten-person interim leadership team.

Presenter Ryan Tubridy and his agent, Noel Kelly, are due to appear before two separate Oireachtas committees on Tuesday while senior management from RTÉ, including Mr Bakhurst, are due to be questioned by politicians later in the week.

When asked about the recent developments at RTÉ during a visit to Limerick, Minister Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O'Brien said “it’s a very serious situation”.

Speaking to reporters, he added: “What’s really important is that confidence is rebuilt in RTÉ, it’s clear to me that major reforms are needed and that reform agenda needs to be supported."
