Letterkenny Rovers boss Stephen McConnell relieved after late drama at Central Park

Letterkenny Rovers were crowned Brian McCormick Premier Division champions at Central Park, following a dramatic conclusion to the league at a sun-drenched Central Park on Sunday afternoon.
Keadue Rovers had looked good for an upset victory, but it was Rovers substitutes Lee McMonagle and BJ Banda who scored two late, late goals to seal the title.
Rovers boss Stephen McConnell admits all that drama certainly spiked the blood pressure, but, at the same time, said it was a brilliant way to get over the line.
“We left it late, we were one down in the 89th minute but fair play to BJ and Lee, they stepped up when we really needed them.
“They both have that in their locker. And it was a dramatic way to get over the line”.
Rovers went back-to-back in the Premier League with Sunday’s victory and McConnell says that retaining the title is a special feat.
“The league is the one you set out to win. The best team wins the league. But that was the hardest Donegal League campaign I’ve seen. The future is definitely bright for Donegal football”.
Rovers are now looking forward to stepping up to the new League of Ireland third tier.
“Ourselves, Bonagee and Cockhill are all making that jump. And it’s exciting. We’ll want to be competitive and challenge and do our best there.
“There are great people working behind the scenes at this club. It’s a great end to the season.
“We’ve only lost two games in three years and that is quite an achievement and something we’re very proud of”.
