The candles of hope on display at last year's Relay for Life event in Letterkenny
The annual Relay for Life begins this evening at the Atlantic Technological University in Letterkenny this evening at 5pm.
The Chairperson of Relay for Life Donegal, Robert O’Connor said survivors will begin the course of events with the first lap, he said: “It is a lovely evening for the survivors, they are our VIP guests and it is just lovely to see the number of purple shirts, it is immense to see them but it is also sad to see them.”
He added that the survivors inspire those who are undergoing treatment with hope: “They are offering hope to everyone else undergoing a cancer journey.”
Music will begin at the Letterkenny-based campus after 4pm. The number of teams at the event has increased this year, he said.
Mr O’Connor said that 50% of people will hear the words ‘you have cancer’ during the course of their lifetime. However, he did add that research and treatments have improved immensely over the years which is also very positive.
The event which supports individuals and families raised €101,000 last year. The event aims to raise money for cancer research and support services with groups walking around a track for a period of 24 hours to symbolise the ongoing fight against Cancer.
