Weather expert hints at White Christmas for Ireland as Met Éireann gives verdict

One weather expert has hinted that it could be a White Christmas in Ireland this year but has said there is huge uncertainty at this stage.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather has shared a picture of a weather model showing very cold conditions over Ireland in late December.

He posted: "Weather models still showing high pressure building close to Ireland from middle of next week. Some hints that it could move Northwest towards Greenland later in the month and possibly open the door to some cold again. Whats the odds on a white Christmas I wonder."

Alan did say that it's difficult to predict Christmas weather this far in advance but that he would keep a thread going from now for his followers.

Met Éireann has mentioned Christmas in its extended range forecast which runs right through to January.

For the week from December 18 to Christmas Eve, they say "the signal for low pressure continues, again likely bringing wetter than average weather for the time of year. Temperatures on the other hand are signalled to be around average over the period.

For the week from Christmas day onwards, they add, "Confidence in the forecast diminishes as uncertainty grows. However, there is a signal for low pressure to be the dominant influence over our weather, giving rise to higher than average precipitation amounts, though temperatures look to remain around average."

It is too early to accurately predict the Christmas weather but experts are already starting to monitor models.
