Donegal U-16 side that won the All-Ireland on Saturday
The Donegal Underage League U-16 team have been crowned All-Ireland SFAI Champions after a dramatic 1-1 draw and a nerve-wracking penalty shootout against a formidable Cork side in Limerick on Saturday.
The match began with Cork on the front foot, applying relentless pressure in the opening 20 minutes. Donegal’s defence, marshalled by the outstanding Donal McBride, Caolan McTaggart, and Odhran Boyle, held firm, but Cork eventually broke through in the 24th minute with a well-taken goal to take the lead.
Donegal responded with resilience, growing into the game under the leadership of captain Niall McBrearty. Jamie Toland came agonisingly close to an equaliser in the 34th minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the box that narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Cork continued to pose a threat and forced a late first-half corner, but Donegal held their ground to go into the break trailing by just one goal.
Emerging for the second half with renewed determination, Donegal wasted little time in making an impact. Just four minutes after the restart, their top scorer, Dillon Doherty, added to his impressive tally with a clinical finish to level the scoreline.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Donegal seized control of the game, creating a series of chances. The industrious Drew Dowds played a pivotal role, putting the Cork defence under constant pressure. Though Cork attempted to respond, the safe hands of Lorcan Coyle in goal and the disciplined back three restricted them to half-chances.
The introduction of substitutes proved to be a turning point. The powerful Cian McMahon replaced the tireless Jamie Toland, while the ever-reliable Lewis Cunea made way for the dynamic Jamie McMonagle.
McMonagle nearly made an immediate impact, bravely diving for a header at the back post, only to be denied by mere inches and sustaining an injury in the process.
As full-time approached, the midfield trio of Davin Kelly, Cian McMahon, and Daithi McTaggart exerted their dominance, with Donegal looking the more likely side to find a late winner. However, with the score locked at 1-1, the match proceeded into extra time.
Drama unfolded early in extra time when Cork were awarded a contentious penalty after the ball struck a Donegal defender’s arm. However, in a moment of huge relief for Donegal, Cork blasted the spot-kick over the bar.
Both sides continued to carve out opportunities, but Donegal’s superior fitness and determination shone through as they pressed for victory.
With extra time unable to separate the sides, the match headed to a penalty shootout, where the tension was palpable. Cork struck first, converting their opening penalty, while Donegal’s first effort sailed over the bar, putting them on the back foot. Cork then doubled their advantage, but Donegal responded with a composed finish to keep their hopes alive.
The shootout took a dramatic turn when Cork’s third penalty rattled the crossbar, allowing Donegal to level the score. As the tension reached fever pitch, both sides traded successful penalties, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion.
With Cork’s final penalty, Donegal goalkeeper Lorcan Coyle pulled off a sensational save to his right, shifting the momentum decisively in his side’s favour.
That left Dillon Doherty with the chance to clinch the title, and he did so in emphatic fashion, coolly slotting the ball into the bottom corner to spark jubilant celebrations on the pitch and the sidelines.
This incredible victory capped off a remarkable campaign for the Donegal U-16s, who showcased an unbreakable spirit and a never-say-die attitude throughout, having also come from behind in the semi-final.
