The Liverpool supporters who came out on top in last year's charity match
This Friday, Letterkenny Community Centre will play host to what promises to be another titanic battle between the local supporters of Liverpool and Manchester United.
Just like last year, the game will be a part of a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI) with a kick-off time set for 7pm.
The game is being organised by cousins Liverpool supporter Marc McCarron and United fan Vinny McLaughlin. These two have been carefully rounding up troops over the last few weeks and it’s all systems go for Friday night, under the lights, right in the heart of the town centre.
In May 2022, these sides also locked horns on a fairly overcast and drizzly evening. Despite the weather on that occasion, the spirits certainly weren’t dampened and the game was played in a competitive, yet fun-filled, manner.
Liverpool fans earned the bragging rights in that one thanks to a 2-1 victory, but of course, the real winner on the night was the sense of charity.
It went a long way to helping these two lads present a cheque to Fergal Smyth of CFI that was worth a staggering €15,000 earlier this year.
Marc, whose lung capacity has been greatly improved due to the advent of kaftrio, holds a special place for this particular charity. Back in 2015, he was being treated at Beaumont Hospital where his lung capacity was at just 46%.
Largely thanks to the advances in medicine that have gone in since then, he recently competed in a senior game for Lagan Harps, where his new lung capacity was a fantastic 94%.
By continuing to raise awareness, as well as some vital funds, it’s hoped that Friday’s upcoming game can support this great cause even more than last year.
Everyone is welcome to attend the game. And while there’ll no doubt be some slagging going about how United finished higher in the league this year, or about the 7-0 rout Liverpool enjoyed over the Red Devils back in March, this event will surely be a great showing of sporting charity.
