WARNING! Hundreds of children's toys recalled across Ireland amid deadly asbestos fears

Asbestos is a banned substance in Ireland and can be deadly if inhaled

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has alerted the public across Ireland to a major recall that is now underway for multiple toys that are feared to contain deadly mineral asbestos.

Recalls have been issued in recent weeks for hundreds of sand toys sold across Ireland that possibly contain the banned substance that can affect the lungs when inhaled.

The products present a risk to health as the sand may contain asbestos. Asbestos is a banned substance across the EU because it poses a risk to health. HSE Public Health advice is that there is low risk to human health from these sand products based on current information.

The CCPC continues to engage with the Health Service Executive (HSE), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), as required. Further updates will be provided as soon as additional information becomes available.

  • Stop using the product immediately.
  • Place the product in a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children. Contact your local authority for advice on collection and disposal.
  • If the product is punctured and the sand inside is accessible, clean sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a protective FFP2 face mask or equivalent. Do not use a vacuum cleaner for clean-up. Double bag the sand, gloves, mask and cloths. Seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children. Contact your local authority for advice on collection and disposal.
  • Prior to disposal contact the place of purchase to request a refund.
