TG4 receive €5.4 million boost in Budget 2026 for more high-quality Irish language content

TG4 Director General Deirdre Ní Choistín welcomed the announcement

As part of Ireland's eagerly-anticipated Budget 2026, the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport has sanctioned a €5.4 million or 9% increase from the exchequer for TG4 next year.

The extra financial boost will be to produce more high-quality Irish language content, children’s programming and expanded news services which will bring the Galway-based station's total funding to €65.4m

TG4 has welcomed the significant increase in it's annual grant for 2026 announced in the budget. It's the second highest increase for TG4 in recent years following the €7.3m which was awarded to the station in Budget 2023 to launch new children’s channel Cúla4.

TG4 Director General Deirdre Ní Choistín praised their allocation of funding from the budget saying: "I am deeply grateful to Minister O'Donavan, his officials in the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and to the new Government for their generous support of TG4 for 2026".

Ní Choistín also paid tribute to the government for their impact in growing the station explaining: TG4 is going from strength to strength due to increased investment from the government in recent years, our audience has grown steadily as a result of this investment. TG4's audience share is now at 2.3%. We hope to continue building on our audience engagement in 2026 and provide high-quality content for our audiences on all platforms".

She concluded by saying: "This investment as we approach thirty years on air demonstrates the Minister's confidence in the TG4 team, the TG4 board and in the value of TG4 as an Irish language public service media provider and the importance of the work we do for the Irish language and Irish language communities around the world".
