Former Ireland and Liverpool star John Aldridge has led the tributes to star striker Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car crash in Spain along with his younger brother Andre.

The Portugal international, who was 28, died in the accident on Thursday morning. Details remain scarce, with the club asking for privacy for Jota's family, team-mates and friends as they try to come to terms with what they called an "unimaginable loss."

In a statement, Liverpool FC said: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

"We will continue to provide them with our full support," the statement concluded.

Jota's sudden passing has left the football world reeling, with tributes pouring in from supporters, fellow players and former stars who knew him on and off the pitch.

Former Republic of Ireland and Liverpool striker John Aldridge expressed his heartbreak online, writing: "I'm absolutely devastated to hear the news of Diogo."

In a further post, he added: "I can't say the way I feel at the moment I can't get my head around it! it's like a part of my family has passed away. Absolutely gutted all our thoughts are with the family. YNWA"

Supporters' groups across Ireland and beyond have also been paying tribute, reflecting the striker's popularity both at Anfield and internationally.

The County Kildare Liverpool Supporters Club said on Facebook: "Devastating news this morning that Diogo Jota has been killed in a car crash in Spain. 28 years young, taken from us way too soon, Rest in peace Diogo, Ynwa."

RIP Diogo & Andre Jota
We Will Never Forget You."

Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, playing a key role in the club's recent successes, including their 2025 Premier League title. He was known for his sharp movement, clinical finishing, and tireless work rate - attributes that made him a fan favourite both at Anfield and during his previous stint with Wolves, where he helped secure promotion from the Championship in 2018.

Jota began his career with Paços de Ferreira in Portugal before signing for Atlético Madrid, eventually joining Wolves and later making the move to Liverpool in 2020.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
