SHOCKING: Arrest made every hour in 2024 for drink driving offences
An Garda Síochána have revealed that they carried out 100,000 checkpoints so far this year and have issued 184,000 on-the-spot fines for road traffic offences. Over 29,000 vehicles have also been seized for road traffic offences.
In a post shared on Facebook, gardaí said: "Every hour of every day so far this year we have arrested a motorist on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs."
Gardaí made an appeal to the public to "make sure that those using Irish roads all make it home alive this Christmas and New Year."
"If you take drugs or drink alcohol before getting into the car to drive, you are playing roulette with your own life and the lives of others."
An Garda Síochána's Christmas and New Year Road Safety Operation is now underway across the country in conjunction with the Road Safety Authority.
In 2024, 165 people have been killed so far on Irish roads.
