A man who was arrested after an elderly woman was assaulted at a nursing home in the Midlands earlier this week is due to appear in court later this Wednesday, gardai have confirmed.
It's alleged a man entered the premises in Athlone, Co Westmeath late on Monday evening and attacked a woman in her room.
It is understood the woman, aged in her 80s, was struck a number of times by the intruder before nursing staff at the facility were alerted to the incident.
They then intervened and the culprit was stopped and the alarm raised.
"Gardaí are investigating a serious assault which occurred at a care home in Athlone, Co. Westmeath on Monday, April 29 2024. A woman, aged in her 80s, was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore for treatment. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening," said a garda spokesperson who confirmed a man, in his 50s, was arrested at the scene.
The man, 54, was detained and questioned at a garda station in the Midlands and a garda spokesperson confirmed that he has since been charged and is due to appear before Athlone District Court later this Wednesday.
Gardai say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
