Garda fired gun during attempt to stop stolen lorry

A Garda has fired a gun during an attempt to stop a suspected stolen lorry in Co Cork.

Gardai were informed of the theft of the lorry from the Bandon area on Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning, gardai spotted the vehicle in the Togher area but it failed to stop when directed to do so.

Gardai said “a managed containment operation” was put in place which ended in the Forge Hill area of Togher.

A man in his 30s was arrested and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Two garda vehicles were damaged in the course of the operation but no injuries were reported.

Investigations are ongoing.

As a result of the gunshot, the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission has been notified of the incident.
