National: Gardaí renew their appeal for information on double fatality

GARDAÍ have renewed their appeal for witnesses of a double fatality to come forward with any information or video footage which they may have.

Two men in their 40’s and 60’s were killed in Youghal, Cork in an Ironman sporting event on the morning of August 20 last.

The stormy conditions at the time were widely blamed for the double fatality, as the aftermath of Storm Betty swept the country at the time.

Competitors Brendan Wall, 45, and Ivan Chittenden, 64, lost their lives as a result of the swimming event in the annual Ironman.

Gardaí are currently assisting the Cork County Coroner with its investigation into the deaths and subsequent inquest.

Gardaí are requesting that anyone who was present at the event and who may have video footage, in any format, to contact Midleton station on 021-4621550.

Gardaí can also be contacted via email at Midleton.IncidentRoom@garda.ie

However, the public are not requested to submit any footage at this time. Members of the investigation team will make contact with them to arrange for the appropriate collection of any video footage.
