Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to come forward
GARDAI are appealing for witnesses after an elderly man was assaulted by intruders who entered his home.
The aggravated burglary occurred in the early hours of Saturday at a property in the Cornamaddy area of Athlone, County Westmeath.
"A male, aged in his late 70s, was assaulted by a number of individuals at a domestic residence, and a sum of cash was taken during the course of this incident," said a garda spokesperson.
The man was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore to be treated for what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
A technical examination of the scene has been conducted by Gardaí and investigations are currently ongoing.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone with any information regarding this incident to come forward.
They are particularly appealing to anyone who was travelling in the Ballykeeran/Glasson Road (N55) area of Athlone between 1am and 5am and who believe they may have seen something out of the ordinary to contact them.
Any road users who may have video camera footage (including dash-cam) from this area at this time are asked to make it available to Gardaí.
