A total of 26 people have died on Irish roads this year to date, according to the latest figures.

In February 2024, eight people have lost their lives in road traffic collisions, the latest being this Saturday, February 17 in an overnight collision in Kilkenny where a man in his 20's was pronounced dead.

With 2023 being the highest number of road deaths recorded in a decade, this year's figures are cause for concern as they are close to matching last years.

26 people have died from January 1 to February 17, 2024. This is down two people on the same period last year, where 28 fatalities were recorded.

Gardaí continue to appeal to motorists to slow down, as 184 people lost their lives in 2023 - nearly a 20% increase compared to 2022.

To date, the 26 people who died in fatal collisions include: five pedestrians, 11 drivers, eight passengers and two motorcyclists.
