Members of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District were told this week that the project now requires 'substantial funding' to progress the design work

The 100km Burtonport to Letterkenny Greenway Project is on track for the next design stage, but a funding shortfall is holding up progress.

The preferred route corridor for the cycling route has now been confirmed. All Transport Infrastructure Ireland approvals are in place for the project to move to Phase 3, which involves design and environmental evaluation.

However, members of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District were told that the project now requires “substantial funding” to progress the design work.

The Burtonport to Letterkenny Greenway received grant funding of €20,000 for 2026, but Donegal County Council has confirmed that this is “not sufficient to progress that design work in a meaningful way”.

The National Roads Office is continuing to liaise with TII officials to explore alternative ways of delivering the greenway project.

A revised approach could allow smaller sections of the route to be delivered on the ground faster under a more sustainable funding model.

Members were told that, if the work proposals are accepted by TII and the necessary funding is secured in 2027, design work could recommence swiftly once approvals are in place.
