A stretch of road in Letterkenny that has seen several accidents and fatalities could be set for a speed limit reduction.

Calls have been made for the 80km/h speed limit on the R245 to be cut to 60km/h between Thorndale and the Kiltoy-Golf Course Road junction.

Councillor Donal Coyle told the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District that it was "vitally important" that the road be examined as part of the next Urban Speed Limit Review.

He said the matter has become even more important now because of housing development taking place on both sides of the road. In its written response, the council said this stretch of road is one of the areas that will be looked at as part of the Urban Speed Limit Review currently being progressed.

A spokesperson said the new map-based byelaws, based on the updated guidelines in addition to the feedback received from the non-statutory public consultation, are currently being finalised.

The council said the target is to present the proposed amendments to elected members at a workshop in late April or early May, before seeking approval to move to the statutory public consultation stage at the May plenary council meeting.
