Residents are also advised to remain particularly alert following a delivery, as thieves may return later to steal newly delivered oil
An Garda Siochana in Donegal are urging householders to take extra precautions to protect their home heating oil tanks as fuel prices remain high, increasing the risk of theft in some areas.
With the cost of heating oil currently elevated, Gardaí and community safety advisers are encouraging residents to be vigilant and to take simple preventative steps that can make properties less attractive targets for thieves. Regularly checking oil levels and arranging smaller but more frequent deliveries can help households quickly identify if oil has been taken from a tank.

"Residents are also advised to remain particularly alert following a delivery, as thieves may return later to steal newly delivered oil," they say. "Any suspicious activity or unfamiliar vehicles in the area should be noted, including registration numbers, and reported to Gardaí.
"Improving the physical security of oil tanks can also significantly reduce the risk of theft. Positioning a tank close to the house and within view of windows can make thieves less likely to attempt a theft due to the increased chance of being seen. At the same time, tanks should ideally be screened from view from passing traffic by fencing, walls, shrubs, or hedging.
"Security lighting with motion sensors can act as a strong deterrent by illuminating the area if someone approaches the tank at night. Property owners are also encouraged to fit good-quality padlocks to tank openings and consider enclosing tanks within lockable fencing, a cage, trellis, or wall structure to make access more difficult.
"Technology can also play a role in preventing theft. Remote electronic oil level gauges are available that trigger an alarm if the oil level drops suddenly, which may indicate a leak or theft. Some systems can even send an alert directly to a homeowner’s mobile phone.
"CCTV cameras are another option being considered by some homeowners and farmers. Small infrared cameras capable of recording vehicles entering a property can assist in identifying suspects and may also deter potential thieves.
"In addition, monitored alarm systems that use wireless beams to detect movement in farmyards or around properties are becoming increasingly popular. These systems can send notifications to the property owner if someone enters the area when it should be empty.
"Authorities say that while no single measure can completely eliminate the risk of oil theft, combining several security steps can greatly reduce the likelihood of becoming a target."
