Deputy Charles Ward queried the Taoiseach in the Dáil regarding an issue with the discs

Donegal Deputy Charles Ward TD has offered to print out insurance discs in colour after a Donegal motorist had their driving test cancelled because theirs was printed in black and white.

Deputy Ward had made a query regarding an issue with the discs, having said that he was contacted by many constituents waiting a long time for driving tests in Letterkenny, Donegal Town and Buncrana, and he described the experience of one constituent whose test was immediately terminated.

Minister Darragh O’Brien replied: “The legal requirement to display a valid insurance disc in the prescribed colours and format is quite distinct from the obligation to hold an approved and appropriate policy of motor insurance as set out under section 56 of the Road Traffic Act 1961.

“An insured driver displaying a black and white home-printed disk may risk incurring a fixed charge of €60 for failing to observe the statutory colour requirements, but is still complying with his or her obligations under the Road Traffic Acts and is thus considered fully insured in the eyes of the law.”

Deputy Ward is to open an office in Ballybofey and told his constituents: “For anyone that doesn’t have a colour printer and requires their disc printed, they will be welcome in my office in Ballybofey once it is up and running where the staff will be happy to help. I will keep you updated!”.
