Driver detected driving at 184km/h in Donegal during road safety operation

A driver has been detected driving at 184km/h in Donegal during a road safety operation over the weekend.

The driver was caught in a 100km/h zone at Tully on the N15. It was the top speed detected in a 100km/h speed zone across the country during the bank holiday weekend Garda roads policing operation which was in place between 7am last Thursday and Tuesday morning.

Over the bank holiday period, gardaí carried out more than 1,025 mandatory intoxicant testing (MIT) checkpoints. 

More than 4,969 breath tests and 190 oral fluid tests were performed which led to 214 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Throughout the weekend, over 2,650 drivers were detected for speeding offences.  Fixed Charge Offences were issued to more than 285 drivers who were detected using mobile phones, to more than 125 unaccompanied learner drivers and to 62 people who were found driving without a seatbelt.

More than 95 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied and 425 vehicles seized for having no tax or insurance.

Gardaí continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear seatbelts and keep their eyes always on the road.
