Donegal Youth Service has launched a new initiative aimed at addressing critical social issues such as inequality, poverty and social fragmentation by building a network of young leaders committed to driving positive change and strengthening cross-community and cross-border relationships on the island of Ireland.

The Ignite Community Programme is a project supported by Peaceplus, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), a north-south body that manages EU funding programmes within Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland.

The programme aims to cultivate vibrant ecosystems of young individuals who can challenge negative narratives and develop social innovations within their communities. Ignite Community aspires to create lasting social impact by promoting social justice, enhancing community cohesion and championing diversity across the region.

Donegal Youth Service has partnered with a diverse range of fantastic partners; Young Social Innovators, Arts Care, HAPANI & Kippie, that have extensive experience in the informal education sector in Northern Ireland and the border counties.

The launch of the programme took place on Tuesday, February 18 at Ormeau Labs in Belfast.

Northern Ireland Education Minister Paul Givan MLA said: “I welcome that the Ignite Community project will enable young people outside the education system to tackle social issues such as inequality and discrimination. Programmes such as this can enhance the lives of young people, creating a real opportunity for lasting and positive change within their communities. These opportunities offer young people a chance to develop a range of useful skills, including technological skills training, which will undoubtedly have a favourable impact on their future outlook.”

Minister for Education, Helen McEntee said: “I am delighted to welcome the launch of the Ignite Community Programme which will make a real difference in the lives of young people in border counties and across Northern Ireland.

“The successful development and launch of the programme are testament to the strong collaboration between Young Social Innovators, Donegal Youth Service, Arts Care, HAPANI & Kippie and I commend them and the Special EU Programmes Body on their work to date.

“I wish all the partners and participants every success and I look forward to seeing the outcomes and impact of this shared learning on our young people and their communities.”

SEUPB chief executive Gina McIntyre said: “Unfortunately we still live in a segregated society and this has negative consequences. Shared learning is a fundamental principle of an equal and integrated society and a core component of Peaceplus.

"Supporting shared learning activities in both the formal and non-formal education setting, these projects will assist young people from diverse backgrounds to learn and grow together. Young people who are most at risk of under-achievement will benefit from tailored solutions to ensure they reach their full potential and enjoy better life opportunities. Earlier this month, a report outlined the continued impact of the conflict/Troubles on young people here some 27 years after the signing of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement, starkly highlighting how intergenerational trauma remains a significant challenge for our society.

“Projects, such as Ignite, will result in more of our citizens feeling the benefit of peace and having an opportunity to share in increased hope and prosperity.”

Lorraine Thompson, Donegal Youth Service CEO added: “We are delighted to be leading out in the Ignite Community Programme across Donegal. In collaboration with the project partners, it will give young people an exciting chance to create real change. We look forward to bringing people together, encouraging creativity, and inspiring new ideas, helping young leaders take on big challenges and build stronger connections between communities. This programme is about shaping a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone.”
