Councillor pleads for safety measures at dangerous Glenswilly junction

A Glenswilly-based councillor says a major collision will occur unless something is done about a dangerous junction in the area.

Councillor Donal 'Mandy' Kelly has called on Donegal County Council to act and implement safety measures at Barack Junction.

Councillor Kelly brought the issue to this month's meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

“It's a junction that we are all aware of at Glenswilly Chapel,” Councillor Kelly said over the junction on the R250 road.

“This junction has seen a lot of accidents. Thankfully, there has been nothing fatal, but there have been a lot of serious accidents.

“Three weeks ago, a motorbike went through a garden. No-one was seriously injured, but I would ask that the Council implement safety measures before there is something major.

“There was lighting installed a couple of years ao and that is to be welcomed, but again we are seeing accidents here.

“Some of the members here have come out and met with myself and residents. I know it's a tricky one, but I feel we have to do something here.”

The motion was backed by Councillor Ciaran Brogan, who said: “Everyone knows there is a continuous white line here, but they still come and pass and ignore the fact that there is a junction there.”

In a written response to Councillor Kelly's motion, Donegal County Council said that a proposed scheme for this junction has been included on the Draft Priority list for Large Low-Cost Accident Schemes and the Low-Cost Accident Schemes.
