An investigation into HSE data breaches that are linked to videos of paper medical records being posted online has been initiated by the Data Protection Commissioner.

RTE says it understands “one of the incidents relates to a video posted on TikTok in November last year showing a person going through boxes of patient records in the now-vacant St Conal's Psychiatric Hospital in Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

The other incident is believed to have occurred at a Dublin facility.”

The Data Protection Commission today launched its Annual Report for 2023.

Commissioner Dale Sunderland reflected on what was a landmark year:

“2023 was a busy year in personal data rights protection. The year saw a significant increase in complaints dealt with by the Data Protection Commission with record fines issued and corrective orders imposed following cross-border and national inquiries. Throughout 2023, the DPC sought to uphold the individual’s right to the protection of their personal data."

The Data Protection Commission is the national independent authority in Ireland responsible for upholding the fundamental right of EU persons to have their personal data protection.
