Kilmacrennan angler James Kenny landed the first salmon of 2024 on the River Lennon.

James’s New Year’s Day catch was the first salmon of the year to be caught on the opening day of the season for 11 years.

The salmon, which took a barbless Flying C, was caught in Watts Pool in the Lennon near Ramelton just after 1pm on Monday.

The salmon was subsequently safely released back into the water. The catch measured 69cm and weighed an estimated 8lbs.

The salmon season runs from January 1 to September 30 and James is said to be ‘delighted’ with the achievement.
