New community centre plan for Letterkenny Islamic Association

The Letterkenny Islamic Association has submitted plans to develop a community centre in the town.

Planning permission has been sought from Donegal County Council to covert a town centre premises.

Letterkenny Islamic Association is seeking to turn first floor offices at St Anne's Court into a community centre.

The location, which fronts onto Ard O'Donnell and High Road, was the home to the Donegal News newspaper until it vacated to a new premises in January.

The Letterkenny Islamic Association is the representative of the Muslim community in Letterkenny and across County Donegal.

They are a non-profit organisation with a registered charity number.

There are over 200 Muslims from all over the world in the Association.

Currently, they hold Friday prayers and Eid prayers in the Letterkenny Community Centre

“We are an active and contributing section of society with a large number of doctors working in Letterkenny University Hospital,” the Letterkenny Islamic Association website says.

“In addition to this, we also contribute to the local economy with local businesses and other professionals such as in the IT industry.

“Over the years we have helped local charities like the We Care Letterkenny Food Bank with fund raising through a sponsored fast in Ramadan where have raised over €3000 to date.”
