Officers in Donegal conduct a checkpoint on Friday night.

Gardaí in Donegal have reiterated appeals for safety on the roads after a motorist was detected driving at 153km/h.

On Friday evening, Gardaí from the Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit were conducting the speed check when they clocked the speeding driver.

The road in question is governed by a speed limit of 100km/h.

Gardaí have confirmed that the driver has been issued with a fine of €160 and they will receive three penalty points.

“Slow down this Bank Holiday weekend and help save lives,” a Garda spokesperson said. “Speed kills.”

On Friday night, officers from the Lifford Garda Station mounted a number of checkpoints as part of a cross border operation with the PSNI.

A spokesperson added: “Please always drive with care, slow down and wear a seatbelt regardless of where you travel.

“Never drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Road safety should be a top priority every time you get behind the wheel.”
