The forecourt at An Grianán Theatre in Letterkenny will be renamed as the Dessie Larkin Plaza.
Councillors unanimously passed a motion, tabled by Councillor Kevin Bradley, at this month's meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.
A former Councillor and Mayor of Letterkenny, Dessie Larkin passed away suddenly in March, 2019.
A former director of An Grianán Theatre, he also sat on the board of the Earagail Arts Festival, which held numerous events on the outdoor space at An Grianán Theatre.
Councillor Bradley told the meeting that this Saturday represents the late Councillor Larkin's fourth anniversary.
“He was born and reared in Letterkenny and was the Town Centre Manager before he died,” Councillor Bradley said.
The motion was seconded by Councillor Donal 'Mandy' Kelly, the Mayor of the Letterkenny-Milford MD.
“It is a very fitting motion and it would be great for Dessie's family to have the forecourt called after him,” Councillor Kelly said.
“Dessie did a lot for Letterkenny in a very short life. He was an absolute gentleman. Hopefully when this is done his family will take some kind of ease from it.”
Just last summer, Donegal County Council was granted €137,000 for the provision of outdoor dining infrastructure outside An Grianan Theatre, including a platform seating area and a weather-resistant canopy.
Councillor Gerry McMonagle suggested that when these upgrade works are complete, it would be an apt time to relause it as the Dessie Larkin Plaza.
