Nikki Bradley has admitted she is very excited having been chosen as an ambassador for this year's VHI Women's Mini Marathon - and you can follow her on her journey.
The Milford-based 37-year-old joined fellow ambassadors Emer Kelly, Lorraine Fanneran, Aimee Connolly, Dearbhla Toal for the launch at the VHI Offices on Abbey Street in Dublin.
"I am delighted to announce that I am an ambassador for this year's VHI Women's Mini Marathon!," Nikki posted. "The VHI Women’s Mini Marathon really is for everyone of all abilities, whether you want to walk, jog or run. I will be following the walk training schedule and plan to do a Instagram live each Sunday to share the ups and downs along the way.
"It will also give you the opportunity to ask questions and support each other in the comments. I've persuaded my Mum and my Sister to do it too, and they will be following the jog and run training schedules. I'm so excited!!"
Diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, at the age of 16, Nikki's right hip was permanently damaged by radiotherapy. She has had two hip replacements so far and last year underwent rotationplasty surgery at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, which removed her thigh and reattached her knee, shin and foot to where her hip was.
But it hasn't dampened the spirits of Nikki, who last year took part in the Donegal Half Marathon, completing 7km. Nikki has completed some staggering feats, including abseiling off Fanad Lighthouse, climbing the Sólheimajökull glacier in Iceland and completing the 4 Peak Challenge inside 32 hours.
She is now targeting the VHI Women's Mini Marathon 10k event, now in its 41st year, which will take place on Bank Holiday Sunday, June 4, at an earlier start time of 12:30pm. The event is open to all those who wish to walk, jog or run the 10km route through Dublin City Centre. Registration for the event is now open on the website. Every participant will receive a VHI Women’s Mini Marathon finishers medal, and the first 10,000 participants who opt in when registering will receive a VHI Women’s Mini Marathon t-shirt. Further to that, Vhi customers can claim back the event entry fee via the VHI app.
