Man charged with assault of teenage girl told to get a new legal team

A Circuit Court Judge told the man, who is charged with assault causing harm, that he is 'anxious' to proceed with the case

A man charged with assaulting a teenage girl in Letterkenny has been told by a Circuit Court judge to obtain a legal team.

The case of Seamus Cooley has been adjourned. The accused man was due to be arraigned at Letterkenny Circuit Court.

However, the court was told that his legal team has come off record.

Mr Cooley is charged that on October 15th, 2017 at Castle Street, Letterkenny that he unlawfully assaulted Shanan Reid McDaid, causing her harm. Ms Reid McDaid was in court for the short hearing.

The offence is contrary to section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act.

Judge John Aylmer adjourned the case until the May sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court.

“You should get a legal team in the next week to allow them to prepare,” Judge Aylmer told the accused.

“I am anxious to proceed on the next date. I will not be adjourning again for the sake of a legal team.”
