Donegal County Council have been urged to carry out repair work on an 'iconic' railway arch on the outskirts of Letterkenny.

Councillor Donal Coyle has asked that the Council remove ivy and carry out any necessary remedial work on the arch at Upper Corkey, Manorcunningham.

At the June meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, Councillor Coyle tabled a motion on the issue.

“This is one of the iconic arches that was a part of the Derry-Letterkenny-Burtonport railway and there aren't too many of them left,” Councillor Coyle said. “For anyone wanting to see a work of art and real workmanship, it's worth looking at this arch.

“There aren't many of these in existence and unfortunately the ivy is overgrowing here and in danger of affecting the structure of the arch.”

The motion was seconded by Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh, who previously brought a motion regarding a similar arch close by.

In response, a spokesperson for Donegal County Council said: “An assessment will be carried out of the works required and considered for inclusion in the works programme.”

The bridge formed part of the Derry-Burtonport line which opened as far as Letterkenny in June 1883 and was in use until the close of the line in July 1953.
