Letterkenny man on series of harassment charges

The man, who is also charged with making a threat to kill or cause serious harm to his neighbours, is set to stand trial after an appearance at Letterkenny District Court

A Letterkenny man has appeared in court charged with harassing and threatening to kill or cause serious harm to his neighbours.

James McErlane, of Whitethorn Close in Letterkenny, appeared at Letterkenny District Court,

The 65-year-old faces a total of nine charges including making threats to cause serious harm or to kill a man and his wife at Whitethorn Close on October 21st, 2018.

He is also charged with making threats to damage the couple's car on the same date.

McErlane is also charged with harassing the man and his wife between dates on March 25, 2011 and April 6th, 2022 at Whitethorn Close.

After being charged, McErlane told Gardai: "I've never spoken to that woman in my life."

McErlane is also charged with making false statements at Letterkenny Garda Station on March 26, 2022 and on November 2, 2021.

He is also charged with harassing a man at Bernard McGlinchey Park on March 26, 2022.

Garda Inspector Tony Byrne that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to prosecution by indictment meaning McErlane will face trial at Letterkenny Circuit Court.

Inspector Byrne asked for the case to be put back six weeks for the preparation of a book of evidence in the case.

Solicitor for the accused Mr Rory O'Brien said his client was not working and was granted free legal aid in the case.

Judge Paul Kelly adjourned the case until July 24th next.
