Parts of Donegal have been hit by flash flooding with a yellow thunderstorm warning in place.

The area around the Ballyraine roundabout in Letterkenny was flooded around 5.30pm on Saturday evening.

Driving conditions have been adversely affected in many areas of the county and motorists are advised to drive with caution.

Met Éireann issued a warning on Saturday afternoon and a warning is valid until 8pm.

“Thunderstorm activity may persist for a few more hours, mostly in northern Donegal,” Met Éireann said.

“Lightning, hail and heavy downpours are possible, leading to some surface water flooding and poor travel conditions.”

Forecasters say that showers are expected to die out early tonight.

Met Éireann said: “The rest of the night will be dry with some clear spells. Patches of mist and fog will form in light southerly or variable breezes. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 Celsius.”
