Ballyare jockey Patrick McGettigan took Pillar of Hope to victory in Friday night's Fitzpatrick's Mercedes-Benz Apprentice Derby Handicap at the Curragh.
Trainer Paul Sweeney from Letterkenny watched on as the 14/1 shot timed his finish to perfection, waiting his chance before making the move 150 yards from home to win by a length-and-a-half.

“It was nice to get it on Derby weekend," Sweeney told IrishRacing.com. "You couldn’t beat it, you couldn’t make it up. It was class. Young Patrick is from Donegal and he used to ride out for me in Letterkenny. It’s a Donegal experience!"
The race was part of the first day of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival, which runs from Friday to Sunday.
