Katy Herron not making any decisions on her future just yet

Donegal full-forward Katy Herron is not calling time on her inter-county career just yet, but said she will take time over the summer to consider her future going forward, following her team’s 0-9 to 0-8 point win over Kildare on Saturday. 

John McNulty’s side is guaranteed to be playing senior football in 2025 following their relegation play-off win over the Lilywhites in Cavan. 

Herron has been a mainstay in the county senior team for over a decade, and while her performances this season proved she will be a valuable player going forward for Donegal, she admits that she will be thinking about other aspects besides football over the summer, one being a holiday abroad.  

“Who knows, it might be time for the young ones to take over from me, but we’ll see how the body is,” Herron said. “The only thing I can confirm is that I’ll be on a plane going on my holidays to get a bit of sunshine. We’ll see after that but no plans yet for what the future holds.” 

The Donegal ladies knew it was going to be a big task considering they lost to Kildare in the league back in January, but the Ulster side put in a phenomenal second-half display as they managed a one-point win in what was an intense and exciting game. 

“We knew after playing Kildare in the league that they were a formidable outfit, and having been promoted this season from Division 2, we knew it was going to be a big battle, and that’s exactly what it was,” said Herron following her side’s victory in Cavan. 

“It came down to the last kick of the game and we’re just delighted to have come out the right side of it.” 

With a gallant second-half performance, Herron admitted that the team were playing for all the players that blazed a trail for Donegal over the years and had the team competing at the highest level. 

“I think for the performance that Kildare put in in the first half we were probably lucky to just be a point behind. We weren’t at all happy with how we were playing,” Herron admitted.  

“I think we were flat getting across the pitch and that created a lot of openings for Kildare, so there were a few harsh words in the dressing room. 

“But we knew this match meant a lot to the entire team. There were lots of people who fought pretty hard to get us competing in senior football over the years, so, it was important to do it for them in keeping our status in the senior championship. 

“I think you could see the hunger at the start of the second half in terms of what every turnover, kickout, and score meant to us. We really wanted to fight for the jersey and I think the girls did a super job in doing that.”
