Donegal County Council urged to apply pressure over ‘dilapidated’ Kilmacrennan bus shelter

The local authority has been called on to write to the National Transport Authority to fund and install a new bus shelter in the middle of Kilmacrennan ‘as a matter of urgency’
Donegal County Council has been urged to pressure the National Transport Authority (NTA) to urgently replace a “dilapidated” bus shelter in Kilmacrennan village.
The call was made by Councillor Pauric McGarvey at The June meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.
The independent representative tabled a motion calling on the local authority to write to the NTA to fund and install a new bus shelter in the middle of Kilmacrennan ‘as a matter of urgency.’
“This (motion) was sought by the Kilmacrennan Tidy Towns committee as they lost marks last year because of its condition,” Cllr McGarvey said.
“The NTA needs to carry out an urgent upgrade or replace the structure. It’s a dilapidated eyesore on the main N56 road.”
Senior roads engineer David McIlwaine, stated that, as the shelter was on a national road, it was also a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
“The upgrade of this bus shelter will be considered as part of the bus shelter enhancement programme,” Mr McElwaine stated in a written response to Cllr McGarvey.
“As it is adjacent to the N56 National Roads, any amendments and changes will have to be reviewed and approved by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
“No funding has been allocated for this upgrade in 2026. The MD will continue to liaise with the bus shelter enhancement team regarding this shelter.”
