Be part of something very special - a brand new woodland is being established in Donegal
Volunteers, community gardeners and allotment holders are invited to take part in a very special project which will see the planting of a new forest.
Organised and coordinated by Ards Walled Garden Community Project, planting will take place this Saturday, May 4, from 10am to 5pm.
A spokesperson said: “We will plant more than 1,000 baby oak trees together with many native - pine, birch, hazel and alder.
“Having gathered over 1,000 acorns locally in the autumn of 2022, the young oaks are now old enough as baby trees to be introduced back to their homeland.
“The location of the Pollnabuckan Field is ideal, as it is easily accessed on foot next to Isabella’s beach.
“This may well be the first woodland establishment project of its kind – helping the local oak woodland community re-establish here at Ards Friary on behalf of the Capuchin Order in Ireland.
The project also includes the establishment of a mini-nursery. This is to produce more native shrubs and herbs like honeysuckle, roses, sloes, spindle and herbs to attract bees and butterflies.
