A recent spate of flooding in Dunfanaghy has councillors calling for protection measures to be put in place in the coastal town. The issue was raised by Sinn Féin Councillor John Shéamais Ó Ferraigh and the Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District Michael McClafferty at the recent Glenties Municipal District meeting in Dungloe.
Cllr Ó Fearraigh said sea water had seeped into a considerable number of businesses on the main street in Dunfanaghy after flooding which occurred on Saturday, May 6.
“We need to look at a shelter or a protection wall in Dunfanaghy. There are huge tides. We need to build a wall there,” Cllr Ó Fearraigh said.
He added that the area floods a number of times a year and that businesses were badly affected. The Dunfanaghy area attracts a lot of tourism to the region all year round.
Cllr Ó Fearraigh’s calls were echoed by Independent Cllr Michael McClafferty who said: “There was fifteen minutes of mayhem on Saturday. We need to get a sea wall up there.”
It is hoped the wall behind the square in Dunfanaghy and Cllr Ó Fearraigh said he feels it may take national funding to address the issue.
The coastal proximity of the west to the sea and climate change dictates that more money and funding is required to curb the issue of flooding, the Cnoc Fola-based representative said.
