Journalist Brianna Parker has put the question to X (formerly Twitter), "what is the etiquette surrounding fada names?""
Originally from the Land Down Under, Australian journalist Brianna now lives in Ireland with her partner and reports for The Irish Times as well as a number of GoLoud stations including TodayFM.
Parker, asked her followers: "People with fada names, what's the general etiquette about including them in correspondence? I've been putting them in emails but when it comes to more casual texts between friends can I leave them out? Or is this offensive and an affront to the Irish language?."
The journalist got a shady response from Irish public service television network, TG4, who responded with a Gif of a side-eye.
A Gif, known as The Graphics Interchange Format is a bitmap image and is a quite common social media tool used across platforms.
The reporter took it well, responding to TG4 saying: "Please TG4. I'm foreign! I can change."
Parker followed up to her question saying: "I say this as someone who has been called Bríd, Breena and Rhianna in Ireland for years because I'd rather accept this as a new identity than correct people who misheard me."
It has caused quite a debate in the comments, one user said: "I do my best with my friends and when it comes to their kids, if I have time I'll Google where the fada goes, but don't always have time. They don't mind in the slightest."
Another user, Breandàn said: "I'm not fussed. For most of my 52 years people struggled with my surname."
