Gardaí in Roscommon have caught a learner driver who was travelling at more than twice the speed limit.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: "Gardaí in Roscommon picked up this driver while they were checking speed in Ballaghaderreen.

"The young, unaccompanied learner had no L-plates displayed and was driving 115kp/h in a 50kp/h zone."

The spokesperson confirmed: "We seized the vehicle, fined him €440 and three penalty points will be added to his permit.

"The car can only be released to a full-licence driver and when the €125 reclaim fee is paid. It's an additional €35 for each day it's unclaimed.

"A hefty cost for a spin."
