The Government proposal to change standing orders was passed by 93 votes to 74 with the Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy stating that the vote on a Sinn Fein amendment was "obstructed" by opposition tellers "without good reason".

There was a long period of shouting and roaring after the vote and, at 3.46pm, the Dail was formally suspended and adjourned until Wednesday morning.

Some opposition TDs shouting “Shame! Shame! Shame!” as Government TDs left the chamber while others made some recordings on their mobile phones.

As TDs continued to shout at each other across the chamber, the Ceann Comhairle said "you're making a holy show of yourselves" and warned all deputies to resume their seats.

She pointed out there were visitors in the public gallery and people watching the proceedings online and on TV. "For the public watching you are making a holy show," she stated.

Its understood opposition parties are to meet this Tuesday evening to discuss their options given the outcome of the vote.
