Gardaí advise public to 'leave extra time' commuting as Phoenix Park closes for 24 hours

Gardaí have advised members of the public to 'leave extra time for any journey in Dublin tomorrow,' Wednesday, January 17.

This follows a major operation that is underway in Dublin to facilitate a visit from Chinese premier, Li Qiang on January 16 and  17.

In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said 'to expect some localised delays' as there may be 'some traffic restrictions in place around the South Dublin area this evening and tomorrow morning.'

Transport for Ireland said: "In general, traffic restrictions for the visit will be kept to the minimum required and it is intended that any impact on the public will be localised and minimal.

The visit will be concentrated in the Dublin area, including Dublin Airport, the Phoenix Park and Dublin south city centre (including Ballsbridge and Dublin city centre).

Rolling road closures will be in operation throughout the two days of the visit."

Gardaí confirmed 'The Phoenix Park will be closed to all access including pedestrians from 7pm this evening for a full 24hrs.'

During the two day visit to Ireland, Chinese premier, Li Qiang is set to meet with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and President Higgins.

Chinese President Xi Jinping nominated Premier, Li Qiang to visit Ireland while President Jiping last visited himself in 2012, before becoming president.
