Local press in Malaga had initially reported that it was a British national who died.

A young Irish woman tragically died while rock climbing in Malaga, Spain on Friday, 10 January.

The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed on Saturday evening that it was an Irish national who was killed after local press had initially reported that the victim was British.

The 21-year-old fell to her death after falling around 500ft at a popular rock climbing area near the village of El Chorro. She was with a male friend at the time of the incident, who also fell but thankfully survived.

Emergency services retrieved the woman's body shortly after the incident occurred at around 7pm on Friday.

The climbers were in an area called the Swiss Sector where a British climber also died last month.

It is not known yet if the young woman was on holiday or lived in Spain, nor has the nationality of her climbing companion been disclosed.
