A crowd at the site of the fighting on Saturday fled the scene following the arrival of gardaí, and 70 roosters were seized by officials.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into an animal welfare incident in Monaghan following the discovery of over a dozen dead roosters at a suspected 'cock fighting' site.

Local Gardaí in Monaghan were alerted at 11am on Saturday to a suspected illegal cock fighting event allegedly taking place at a private residence in Emyvale.

Cock fighting is a blood sport, involving domesticated roosters as the combatents. The roosters and chickens used for the fighting often endure significant physical injuries and trauma, and in many cases fights are 'to the death'.

Upon the arrival of the gardaí at the site of the alleged cock fighting site in Monaghan, a large number of people reportedly "fled the scene".

Following their arrival, assistance from the Department of Agriculture was sought and a warrant to search the residence was obtained.

During the course of a search, 15 dead roosters were discovered on the property while a further 70 roosters were seized by a number of Department of Agriculture personnel in attendance. Evidence of suspected "cock fighting" was also seized.

Gardaí said that an investigation is continuing at Monaghan Garda Station and, officials will continue to liaise with the Department of Agriculture regarding this matter.

"Anyone with any information that can assist Gardaí with this investigation are asked to contact Monaghan Garda Station on 047 77200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station," Gardaí said in a statement.
