The election for the first ever directly elected mayor in Limerick will take place alongside local and European elections

Ireland’s independent electoral commission, An Coimisiún Toghcháin, have confirmed that the election for Limerick's directly elected mayor will take place in June.

The announcement comes following the signing into law by President Michael D. Higgins of the Local Government (Mayor of Limerick) and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill, 2023.

The law provides for the establishment of an office of mayor for Limerick City and County and for an election to select Limerick’s Mayor.

The election for Ireland’s first ever elected Mayor is scheduled to take place in early June alongside the Local and European Elections.

Ms Justice Marie Baker, The Chair of An Coimisiún Toghcháin said that with the legislation now signed by the president, Limerick and Ireland’s first ever Mayoral election "is going to happen in early June".

"It’s now time for the people of Limerick to get registered so that you can vote in this historic election for Ireland’s first ever elected Mayor," she continued.
